The Impact of Coronavirus on US Economy

The Impact of Coronavirus on US Economy

Being the global world leader, the US always influences and is influenced by the ongoing events in the world. This statement is true in all scenarios and in the current Covid-19 too. The virus erupted in China but it might affect the US more than China. The warm weather might help the US in lessening the damage but controlling the mobility of people in the US is very difficult to control. Unlike the authoritarian regime of China, it is very difficult to control the movement of the people. As China did in Wuhan by locking the whole city, it is impossible to do it in a democratic state like the USA. The advanced economies like the US are affected more than other economies because of multiple reasons. There are high wages in the advanced economies and when the pandemic like Covid-19 erupts; people might have to stay home and might not get the income. In the US, there is a big issue of unpaid leaves as most of people do not get income when they stay home. Moreover, the industries of auto parts, generic medicines, diet coke, and iPhone have been hit badly due to less export. This virus has damaged badly the global market but it is speculated that the US might be the biggest affectee of it; if this virus prevails. The students also feel the heat of such pandemics. When the students do not go to school in such cases; there are multiple businesses attached to the studies are hit very often. This includes traveling, foods, sports, stationery and many more.

Traveling:

Travelling is one of the largest businesses in the US. According to the studies, it is seen that an average American takes three flights a year. If this ratio is seen in the case of China, it stands at half a flight for an average Chinese per year. This shows how much business in the US is happening in terms of traveling. There is a yawning gap between the traveling business of the US and other countries. This is why the US will face the colossal disaster of Covid-19 more than any other state.

This conundrum of the traveling business has faced another blow by the epidemic disaster of Diamond Princess (the boat). The people stranded in that boat of corona affectees might hit the US business of cruises much more than ever. Every year, there are almost 11.5 million passengers from the US that travel on such cruises. This number is minimal if seen in the case of China. There are almost 2.3 million Chinese who travel on cruises every year. If we see this ratio in the case of other countries; it would be even more trivial as compared to China and the US. This is why it is speculated that the impact of Covid-19 on the economy of the US will be more than that of China.

Sporting Events:

The sporting events in the US are a great source of income in the US. Due to Covid-19, it is advised not to gather a large audience in one place. This will be havoc for the US economy. The March Madness Basketball tournament is to be played in the US without the presence of the audience. This is very bad news for the sports-loving state like the US.  The sports business in the US generates billions of dollars of money every year. The sports spending in the US is 10 times more than what it is in China. If the sports events start happening in the US without the presence of the audience; it will be a great threat to the sporting industry of the US and its economy overall.

Service-Oriented Economy:

The US is a service-oriented economy and is least dependent upon its agriculture. Service is a sector where people meet each other and business happens while in agriculture there is less interaction. Amidst such diseases, people do not meet each other much and seclude themselves in their houses and the business sector is affected badly. Fewer people visit the dentist for checkups, restaurants, and hotels. All the industries will be hit in the worst possible manner Americans have witnessed for decades if this pandemic gets out of control.
